🎨 Los Rollos de Doña Mitza

Original painting by Oscar Melgar — Acrylic airbrush on canvas · 100 cm × 76 cm

She meets your gaze with quiet confidence. Hair rollers crown her head like a tiara, her blue dress soft against the warm chaos of a Panamanian corner shop behind her. A sign reads "Marika." This is everyday Panama — intimate, vibrant, and utterly alive.

Los Rollos de Doña Mitza is a masterwork of hyperrealistic portraiture by Oscar Melgar, one of Panama's most celebrated artists. Rendered in acrylic airbrush with extraordinary precision, the painting captures not just a woman, but a moment — the kind that feels familiar even if you've never lived it.

About the Artist

Oscar Melgar began his artistic journey at age 14 as an apprentice to Andrés Salazar, one of the founding fathers of Panama's iconic diablo rojo bus painting tradition. In 1984, he earned a degree in Visual Arts from the Ganexa Institute of Fine Arts in Panama City. Despite early criticism from the academic world for his roots in bus painting, Melgar persevered — and today he is responsible for the decoration of over 80% of the painted buses circulating Panama City.

His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the prestigious Liverpool Biennial (2006), where his painted buses became a celebrated cultural exchange between Panama and the UK. Melgar's art bridges the vernacular and the fine art world, combining pop art energy with baroque richness and deeply personal portraiture.
